SHOWCASE THE UNREAL EDITOR’S POTENTIAL VIA CUSTOM-BUILT CREATIVE & COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHTS

Since 2018, Fortnite has championed player-made experiences with Creative Mode. Now, Unreal Editor offers a mind-boggling swath of tools for just about anyone to create just about anything: like a 2D cartoon-style platformer. Or an FPS battle arena. Or a zero-G space horror. If you can dream it, you can likely make it. It’s pretty wild, honestly.

At Hammer, we’re used to shooting in pre-designed builds. But with Unreal, we can create our own sets from the ground up. These sets must hit an incredibly high bar to show off UEFN’s variety, polish, and breadth. What’s more, we’re constantly hunting for the best community creations — out of thousands of creative islands — right as they start to trend.

To blend a few analogies:

we are simultaneously exploring and building the Wild West of UEFN, just as it’s beginning to boom.

DISCOVERING ISLANDS IN FORTNITE’S OCEAN

Okay, we promise we’ll stop changing analogies and metaphors, but know that UEFN truly is an ocean. Its creator tools are vast. Its fandoms are deeply complex. And spotting a standout island is like finding a needle in a… you get the idea. Our workflow goes hand-in-hand with Epic: we spot trending islands using community chatter and player analytics. From there, our Production and Creative concept spots that hit on an island’s unique traits, like a genre twist or a gorgeous world design. We identify it, pitch it, shoot it, and post it.

This turnaround is just one week, from identification to delivery.

The power of Unreal Editor lies in its versatility. If you can imagine it, you can probably make it, and play it. This is a gamechanger for our creatives. It allows them to propose sets to serve their ideas, instead of retrofitting concepts to pre-baked builds. So when a new mode or feature hits Fortnite, our Creative and Capture teams can design and shoot in sets that best hit our shared vision.
